Długość ciała 12,5–16 cm, masa ciała 9–36 g[4].

Greckie φευγω pheugō – unikać; πεδιον pedion – otwarta przestrzeń, równina, pole < πεδον pedon – ziemia < πους pous, ποδος podos – stopa[5].
