Rodzina obejmuje gatunki występujące w tropikalnych regionach od Meksyku do Argentyny[6].

Przed 2016 rokiem klasyfikowana jako podrodzina w obrębie rodziny rzekotkowatych[1][7][8]; Duellman, Marion i Hedges (2016) podnieśli ją do rangi odrębnej rodziny[9].
