Deutsch: In der Hauptsatzung steht diese Blasonierung:„Das Wappen des Landkreises zeigt auf gespaltenem Wappenschild rechts einen aufsteigenden goldenen Löwen im blauen Felde, links drei übereinanderstehende rote Herzen im goldenen Felde.“Heraldisch korrekt sollte es heißen: „Gespalten von Blau und Gold (Gelb); vorn ein steigender rotbewehrter und -bezungter goldener (gelber) Löwe, hinten balkenweise drei rote Herzen.“

Historia obiektu

Deutsch: Das von Gustav Adolf Closs gestaltete Wappen wurde dem Landkreis am 12 Januar 1927 durch das Preußische Staatsministerium verliehen und zählt zu den frühesten deutschen Landkreiswappen. Es zeigt den welfischen Löwen welcher das welfische Stammland Lüneburg symbolisiert. Die Herzen beziehen sich auf das dänische Königswappen, welches mit Herzen bestreut ist, infolge der Heirat Herzog Wilhelms von Lüneburg mit Helena von Dänemark im Sommer 1202. Das Wappen symbolisiert die Hochzeit des Paares. Herzog Wilhelm und Prinzessin Helena gelten als Stammeltern aller späteren Welfen.

English: The arms were granted on January 12, 1927. They are one of the oldest district arms in the Germany. The district is practically identical to the former Duchy (later Principality) of Lüneburg. The Dukes of Lüneburg were of the Welfen dynasty, that used a lion as its arms. The lion in the right part of the arms is the lion of the Welfen in opposite colours. The hearts in the left part are taken from the Danish national arms. Duke Wilhelm of Lüneburg married in the 13th century Princess Helene of Denmark.
