Puccini has never written a more interesting airthan this narrative. It is one of the great numbersof the opera, and always arouses an audience to ahigh pitch of enthusiasm. The tender sympathyof the opening—Your little hand is cold; thebold avowal— I am a poet; the glorious beautyof the love motive at the end—and the final bril-liant high note, are all extremely effective. Then follows the charming Mi chiamano Mimi,in which the young girl tells Rudolph of her piti-fully simple life; of how she works all day makingartificial flowers, which remind her of the blos-soms and green meadows of the country; of thelonely existence she leads in her chamber upamong the housetops.
