OpisMonument Metro Station, Newcastle upon Tyne.jpg
English: This is my take of the much photographed central column of the Monument Metro Station in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The monument from which the station takes its name is Grey's Monument, a Grade I-listed monument in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. The monument - a 41 m Doric column containing a spiral staircase and topped off with a 4 m statue of Earl Grey - was built in 1838 to celebrate the passing of the Great Reform Act.
The column is located directly above the station and rests on a 10 m deep circular concrete plinth hidden behind the "Monument" sign in the photo.
