A shekel of silver was worthabout fifty-six cents, and the whole price paid by Abraham for this fieldand cave was about two hundred and forty dollars. But money was worthso much more then than it is now, that that sum would be equal to aboutfifteen hundred dollars now. Abraham buried his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah beforeMamre, in the land of Canaan. It was usual in those times and in thatcountry to bury people in caves, which were like little chambers cut out ofthe side of some hill, or vaults bricked or arched over; and here the wholeof a family would lie together.
