Nagroda ta wzięła swoją nazwę od Jamesa E. Norrisa, właściciela zespołu NHL [[Detroit Red Wings]] w latach 1932-1952. Po raz pierwszy została przyznana na zakończenie sezonu 1953/54.

[[Bobby Orr]] z [[Boston Bruins]] jest rekordzistą pod względem kolejnych zwycięstw. Zdobył on to trofeum 8 razy z rzędu w latach 1968-1975. [[Doug Harvey]] był siedmiokrotnym laureatem a [[Ray Bourque]] i [[Nicklas Lidstrom]] sięgali po nie po pięć razy. Za sprawą Orra i Bourque'a właśnie to Boston Bruins są klubem, do którego Norris Trophy wędrowało najczęściej bo aż 13 razy. Bobby Orr z Boston Bruins jest rekordzistą pod względem kolejnych zwycięstw. Zdobył on to trofeum 8 razy z rzędu w latach 1968-1975. Doug Harvey był siedmiokrotnym laureatem a Ray Bourque i Nicklas Lidstrom sięgali po nie po pięć razy. Za sprawą Orra i Bourque'a właśnie to Boston Bruins są klubem, do którego Norris Trophy wędrowało najczęściej bo aż 13 razy. Na drugim miejscu są Montreal Canadiens z 11 zwycięstwami.[2]

Tylko dwóch zawodników wygrało w tym samym sezonie zarówno Norris Trophy jak i Hart Memorial Trophy - Bobby Orr (sezony 1969/70, 1970/71 i 1971/72) oraz Chris Pronger (1999/2000).[3] Pięciu innych hoekistów zdobyło Hart Trophy przed ustanowieniem Norris Trophy: Billy Burch, Eddie Shore (czterokrotnie), Ebbie Goodfellow, Tommy Anderson i Babe Pratt.[4]
