Brzeżany pogrom

The pogrom in Brzeżany is a pogrom carried out on July 6, 1941 by the Ukrainian people from the German inspiration on the Jewish inhabitants of Brzeżany.

In the last days of June 1941, after the outbreak of the German-Soviet war, NKVD officers murdered 174 to 300 prisoners in the local prison. The bodies of those murdered were buried at the castle in Brzeżany or thrown into the Złota Lipa river Finding the NKVD victims served as an excuse to organize a pogrom against Jews accused of sympathizing with communism. This was in line with the directives of Reinhard Heydrich on waging war in the USSR, ordering the local peoples to encourage and inspire anti-Jewish pogroms.
