== Flow ==

Hi. I saw your discussion about Flow on Phabricator.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T130009] I wanted to offer you some helpful information, in case there is another discussion about having Flow here.

When Flow was first being created, the lead software designer stated that Flow was not going to support wikitext. Many many editors told him that proper wikitext support was necessary, and that we were never going to accept a talk-page-replacement that didn't have genuine wikitext support. The lead designer for Flow ignored us. <u>Flow can't save wikitext.</u> Later, a <u>fake</u> wikitext mode was added to Flow. Flow doesn't support all wikitext, the wikitext it does support does not always render correctly, and that wikitext does not get saved. You can type in wikitext, but when you save or preveiw, it converts the wikitext to something else (HTML+RDFa) and it throws away the wikitext. When you're done previewing and return to wikitext-edit mode, or if you save and try to edit again, it no longer has the wikitext you typed. In order to show you wikitext again it converts the HTML+RDFa into new, fictional wikitext. That wikitext is often different from what you typed in, and sometimes it gives you broken wikitext.

Sometimes it has trouble with refs, sometimes one line of wikitext is split into two lines, sometimes it shows lines in the wrong order, sometimes it gets section headings wrong, and more. It can even result in "tumors" - translating from wikitext to HTML+RDFa and back to wikitext can result in garbage that expands each time you preview or save-and-edit-again. If you preview or save-and-edit ten times, it grows to 40 characters of garbage. If you preview or save-and-edit a hundred times, it grows to 400 characters of garbage. It just keeps growing on each save or preview. Even reverting an edit is broken. It doesn't save the wikitext, so a revert can't simply resore the old version. Trying to revert an edit can damage damage the old version.

I'll include two really ugly examples of Flow problems below, in case anyone wants to test it.

Several Flow pages were created on English Wikipedia over the last few years. Every page had usage drop to zero. The EnWiki community deleted nearly all of them, and now Flow is being completely uninstalled from EnWiki.[https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3ABethNaught%2FDraft_Flow_RfC&action=historysubmit&type=revision&diff=745101822&oldid=744733998] There is currently a discussion on whether Flow is going to be removed from meta.wiki as well.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T130009]

Flow discussions rapidly turn into unreadable spagetti when more than a few people are involved. Some comments are top-posted, some are bottom posted, and it's just a general mess. You can't edit the page to fix it. The page history is lousy as well. You can't see an old version of the page, and you can't get a diff across multiple edits. When you go to the history you only get the single comment with zero context.

I hope this helps, grin. If you want to reply you should probably do so at [[EN:User_talk:Alsee|my EnWiki talk page]]. I don't come to PlWiki often. [[Wikipedysta:Alsee|Alsee]] ([[Dyskusja wikipedysty:Alsee|dyskusja]]) 00:13, 31 paź 2016 (CET)

=== Example 1 ===

{{#if:redflag|<span style="color:red;|<span style="}} font-weight: bold">Red.</span>

Flow can't even save that wikitext! When you save or preview it completely breaks. Half of the wikicode is gone, and Flow just dumps the rest of it onto the screen as raw text. If you try to save that in Flow, your coment will look like this:

<nowiki><span style="color:red; font-weight: bold">Red.</nowiki>

=== Example 2 ===

<div><table><td><li>Bob<div>
Charlie
</div>Alice</table></div>

If you copy-paste that code to Flow, it will display the lines in a different order! Alice will be on the bottom!
