Charles River (poemat)
Charles River – poemat epicki amerykańskiego poety Thomasa Coffina Amory’ego[1], opublikowany w 1888 nakładem wydawnictwa John Wilson and Son. Utwór dzieli się na 17 części: Fons, Wampanoags, Mount Pegan, Mother Brook, Newton, The Falls of the Charles, Riverside, Homes of Wealth, Nonantum, Cambridge, Homes of the Poets, Harvard College, Mount Auburn, Annex to Harvard College, Boston, Noblesse Oblige i Conclusion. Został napisany strofą dziesięciowersową (decymą)[2].
- In ancient days, when earth and sky were young,
- The ocean breeze, from healthy vapors bred,
- On crumbled rocks its humid treasures flung,
- And every barren spot with verdure spread.
- The summer clouds dropped down their quickening showers.
- The summer sunbeam all its ardor pours,
- Till form and tint bedeck the turf with flowers;
- Where root can cling, the tree majestic soars.
- Perchance coeval with this earliest morn
- Our stream to youth perennial was born.
