Corel Painter jest programem grafiki rastrowej, pozwalającym w pewnym zakresie odwzorowywać tradycyjne narzędzia malarskie i graficzne jak m.in.; ołówek, węgiel, piórko, flamaster, farbę olejną, farbę akrylową, aerograf, gwasz, akwarelę, sumi-e. Twórcami pierwszej wersji w 1991 roku byli trzej informatycy Mark Zimmer, Tom Hedges, John Derry. Natywnym formatem zapisu grafiki jest nietypowy format rif.
