Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta[edytuj | edytuj kod]

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 17:28, 15 sty 2012 (CET)

MediaWiki 1.19[edytuj | edytuj kod]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to upgrade MediaWiki (the software powering this wiki) to its latest version this month. You can help to test it before it is enabled, to avoid disruption and breakage. More information is available in the full announcement. Thank you for your understanding.

Polish trains[edytuj | edytuj kod]

I have uploaded some pictures in the commons. I get no response in the village pump so I wil try my luck here.Smiley.toerist (dyskusja) 09:43, 24 mar 2012 (CET)[odpowiedz]

I get confused when I compare the EN57 and EN71 categories, there are old and renovated trains and renummering going on. I uploaded File:Gdansk SKM terminus.jpg and File:Gdansk SKM terminus 2.jpg but I am not certain wich type it is. Another frustration: Is there no railmap with the correct railway line numbers? Is had to a lot of research to find the correct line number for File:Jaslo station.jpg. Smiley.toerist (talk) 11:26, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Wich type of polish locomotive is this? File:Line 108 between Jaslo and Zagórz.jpg. And could someone give the precise location along the line?Smiley.toerist (talk) 00:05, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Here's what I've found:
Perhaps someone else will be able to give some information about the lines. Thanks, --Mikołka (dyskusja) 21:39, 26 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

I have added two pictures to (Zagórz train station) and three to the line 107 tot the border. Is it stil posible to continue with the train on the Slovakian side as I did in 2004? I get confused with the train stations in Zagórz, are there two stations? Is this an other one? Smiley.toerist (dyskusja) 13:52, 28 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

LOT Polish offices[edytuj | edytuj kod]

Hi! The company still states that "Ul. 17 Stycznia 39" (File:LOT 003.jpg) is the registered office, but it also has a newer office building at "Ul. 17 Stycznia 42" (File:LOT 006.jpg) - "Ul. 17 Stycznia 42" is labeled as "Board Office" and "Maintenance and Overhaul Service" (See this image) - EuroLOT's address is also "Ul. 17 Stycznia 39" Did LOT move its executives to "Ul. 17 Stycznia 42", or are they still in "Ul. 17 Stycznia 39"? Which building is considered to be LOT's headquarters?

Thanks WhisperToMe (dyskusja) 03:35, 27 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

According to KRS (National Registry of Companies) the official address of the Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT SA is ul. 17 Stycznia 39. Therefore even if some divisions were moved to the new building, the old one should be referred as the main HDQ. --Mikołka (dyskusja) 05:54, 27 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
The question really boils down to whether a company's headquarters is a company's legal address of incorporation or the actual location of its top management. In PLL LOT's case the former is at No. 39 and the latter seems to be at No. 43 (not 42, mind you, that would be on the other side of the street where there is in fact nothing but allotment gardens). While I couldn't find any hard and fast online source confirming that the top management have moved to the new building, it is extremely likely that they have. File:LOT 009.jpg clearly shows that No. 43 is the location of PLL LOT's biuro zarządu – translated vaguely as "board office" on the same sign, but zarząd in Polish may only refer to the management bord, not the board of directors. I found a PLL LOT job advertisement that says the CEO's secretariat is located at No. 43 (przy ulicy 17 Stycznia 43 w sekretariacie Prezesa Zarządu). And, well, think about it; if you were the CEO of a company that has just built (then apparently sold and leased back) a big shiny new office building that is one of the highest-class in Warsaw, would you move there or still sit cramped in the old, small and ugly building next door just because you didn't bother to go through all the red tape and fees necessary to change the company's legal address? — Kpalion(dyskusja) 10:44, 27 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
Both LOT's website and Registry give No. 39 as the address, so I would prefer to follow (official) sources. You're right, the board has likely moved to the new building. But if the company doesn't bother to change the address, why should Wikipedia do? ;) After all, WP:NOTYELLOW, contact information is not that important. As for the picture of No. 43, you can put in the description what the sign says – Board Office. --Mikołka (dyskusja) 11:52, 27 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
Sometimes companies do have different executive management locations than the "registered offices" - On the English Wikipedia we go by where the executive management is, even if the company registered office is different. I know it is different on some other Wikipedias, where the registered office goes in the infobox. Accor had its registered office in a suburb of Paris, but the executives were located in Paris itself. However in the case of LOT, we need to have evidence that the management is in X building. WhisperToMe (dyskusja) 12:47, 27 mar 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Please note that the "Führerhauptquartier" Werwolf has been erroneously named "Wehrwolf" on some WP editions, including yours. (See the "Naming" section in the English version for the correct info). Update on IPv6[edytuj | edytuj kod]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2011 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We are interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year 2011. Detailed information about the contest can be found at the introductory page.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.

We regret that you receive this message in English; we intended to use banners to notify you in your native language but there was both, human and technical resistance.

Abuse Filter[edytuj | edytuj kod]

It didn't prevent you, your edit was still saved, but tagged (unless we're talking about something else than Wikipedista:Makecat-bot). The abusefilter interpreted your edit as blanking (and you did remove a large percentage of the page). Also, the User: namespace is localized as "Wikipedysta", not "Wikipedista", so the page you created was actually in the main namespace... the filter wouldn't run if the page was placed in User: namespace properly. I've now moved it. Matma Rex dyskusja 11:15, 16 cze 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year[edytuj | edytuj kod]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

Hi,

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out[edytuj | edytuj kod]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed[edytuj | edytuj kod]

Please translate for your local community

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!

Thanks!

it.wiki in trouble, once again, this time is worse than last year[edytuj | edytuj kod]

Hi, this is just to let you know that the dangerous law that wasn't issued last year, when we blacked-out the site, is once again under discussion at the Italian Senate. This time things seem to be much much worse than one year ago. The act is now harder and contains many more obligations, so many and so dangerous that no sysops would work at such conditions because it would definitely be too risky. Very few among our users would go on editing BLPs or "spicy" topics any more because it could be very costly: up to 100,000 euros! And any legalised troll saying that something in our articles disturbs him, would be entitled to request an addition (inside the article) which actually we are not going to accept because the troll is not required to be honest and tell the truth, any liar would be legally welcomed and we couldn't even comment... (I'm not kidding, it's incredible but true...)
Moreover, this time the approval could more probably be forced by the so-called technical government (headed by Mr. Monti), and all the bigger Italian parties toghether (Berlusconians hands in hands with former communists - both had separately tried to enforce such an act before) are working for strengthening the act. So, this time we need a critical help from anyone, we need it now because the scheduled vote on next Monday could be the last time we can freely work on it.wiki. We need it strong because main Italian media are simply ignoring our protest, and we can't read any news about it outside the web.
So, please, please, please, do whatever you can in order to avoid at least that this can happen in a complete silence. Inform your deputy, call the closest Italian embassy, spam your papers and/or our Senators (open individual files for addresses), use your fantasy and do whatever you think might be strongly helpful in protecting Wikipedia, starting from spreading the news across the WikiWorld.
Any little thing you can do will be vitally important for it.wiki.
Thank you in advance --Gianfranco (dyskusja) 02:29, 27 paź 2012 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
