Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline (ヴァレリアン＆ロールリンヌ, Varerian ando Rōrurinnu?) is a French/Japanese animated television series based on the French comic book series Valérian and Laureline written by Pierre Christin and drawn by Jean-Claude Mézières. The animation first aired in both France and Japan in 2007.

Production

An animated Valérian series was first proposed in 1976. In 1982, Mézières produced concept art for an episode titled The Asteroids of Shimballil (Les Astéroïdes de Shimballil). These were published in 2000 as an appendix to the album release of Bad Dreams.

In 1991, Dargaud Films financed the production of a three minute pilot, directed by Bernard Deyriès and animated by Studio 32 in Paris and Luxembourg, but nothing came of this venture. Several stills from this pilot episode were published in Mézières Extras.

Another pilot, depicting Valérian and Laureline being pursued to the space station Point Central (first seen in Ambassador of the Shadows) by the criminal gang known as the Mortis Quartet (first seen in Hostages of the Ultralum), directed by Florient Ferrier, was made by the French animation studio 2 Minutes in 2001. Nothing came of this attempt either.

Another animated adaptation, titled Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline, is in production and is expected in 2007. It is a French-Japanese co-production, directed by Philippe Vidal, involving Statelight, Dargaud and Luc Besson’s Europacorp. Scripts are being written by a French team under the supervision of Peter Berts while Charles Vaucelles is responsible for the realisation of the characters and Vincent Momméja is responsible for the design of the locations and spacecraft. Music is by Alexandre Azzaria. The French version of the series will consist of forty 23 minute episodes while the Japanese version will have 11 minute episodes. Two trailers have been released for the series to date: the first on 24 April 2006 and the second on 10 October 2006. According to Animation World Network, "Time Jam - Valerian & Laureline sets out to answer the question: Where on Earth has Earth gone? Valerian and Laureline, our two young heroes, seem to be the only representatives of the human race in the unsafe galaxy where the nightmarish Vlagos are conspiring to control the world. Sent out on an assignment by the head of STS (the Spatial-Temporal Service), Valerian and Laureline discover the existence of a time-portal, a mysterious phenomenon, which may hold the key to the recovery of Earth. The series from Dargaud Marina mixes 2D and CGI animation with an anime touch." The series was originally schedule to air on France 3 in 2007, but recently information has revealed that Canal + will air the series starting October 20th, 2007.A English dubbed trailer was released recently thus it is probable it will be released in English soon, though the actors have a British accent thus it is most likely going to Britain not the U.S.

Compared to the Comics

The series differs from the original comics in that Valerian comes from the year 2417 instead of 2720, and meets Laureline in the year 912 instead of 1000. Whereas in the comics Valerian takes Laureline back to the 28th century (25th for the anime) without any trouble, in the animated series this results in Earth disappearing from the solar system.

Animizacja przygód Valerian'a były proponowane już w 1976r. In 1982, Mézières wyprodukował concept art dla odcinka nazwanego "The Asteroids of Shimballil" (Les Astéroïdes de Shimballil). Te były opublikowane w 2000r. jako dodatek do 1 albumu komiksu- "Bad Dreams".

W 1991, Dargaud Films sfinansował produkcje trzy-minutowego pilota, pod kierownictwem Bernard'a Deyriès i animowanego przez Studio 32 w Paryżu i Luxemburgu, ale nic z tego nie wyszło. Kilka ujęć z tego pilota były publikowane w Mézières Extras.

Inny pilot, opisujący Valérian'a and Laureline, gdzie byli pursued- nie wiem czy to chodzi o ściganie, czy prześladowanie do stacji Point Central (widzianej najpierw w albumie "Ambassador of the Shadows") przez gang znany jako Mortis Quartet (widziany najpierw w albumie "Hostages of the Ultralum"). Kolejna adaptacja komiksów, nazwana Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline( w polsce pod tytułem "W pułapce czasu"), jest w produkcji i skończyła się w 2007 roku. Jest to francusko-japońska co-production, kierowana przez Philippe Vidal, w tym Statelight, Dargaud and Luc Besson’s Europacorp. Scenariusz pisany jest przez grupę pod kierownictwem Peter Berts kiedy Charles Vaucelles jest odpowiedzialny za realizację postaci a Vincent Momméja odpowiedzialny jest za projekty otoczenia i statku kosmicznego. Muzykę stworzył Alexandre Azzaria. Francuska( tak samo jak i polska) wersja ma odcinki trwające ok. 23min. kiedy Japońska wersja ma odcinki trwające ok. 11min. Dotychczas wydane były dwa trailery: pierwszy 24 kwietnia 2006 i drugi 10 października 2006.

Zgodnie z Animation World Network, "W pułapce czasu" próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie: Gdzie podziała się ziemia( z angielskiego: Where on Earth has Earth gone?)? Valerian and Laureline, dwoje młodych bohaterów, wyglądających na ostatnich przedstawicieli naszego gatunku w niebezpiecznej galaktyce, gdzie przerażający Vlagosi próbują przejąć kontrolę nad galaktyką. Wysłani z wyznaczonym zadaniem przez głowę STS (Spatial-Temporal Service), Valerian and Laureline odkrywają istnienie portalu czasu, tajemniczego fenomenu, który może zawierać rozwiązanie zagadki zniknięcia Ziemi, a także sposób na jej przywrócenie. Serial od Dargaud Marina mixuje 2D and animację CGI z domiesząką anime." Serial miał być oryginalnie puszczony na przez France 3 w 2007, ale co jakiś czas dochodziły wieści, że Canal + puści serię 20 października 2007.Anglojęzyczny trailer był puszczany co jakiś czas, dając na myśl, iż angielska wersja ukaże się niebawem, lecz aktorzy mieli wyraźny brytyjski akcent, co wskazywało, że serial będzie emitowany w Wielkiej Brytanii, a nie w USA.

W porównaniu z komiksem

Serial różni się od oryginalnego komiksu min. tym, że Valerian pochodzi z roku 2417 zamiast 2720, i poznaje Laureline w roku 912 zamiast 1000. W komiksie Valerian zabiera Laureline z powrotem do 28 stulecia (25 dla serialu) bez kłopotów, a w serialu powoduje to zniknięcie ziemi.
