The single was released on August 28, 2015.[1] Upon release, the song was well received by music critics, and was also a commercial success, topping the charts in Hungary, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Release

Bieber announced the song on July 28, 2015 on On Air With Ryan Seacrest.[1] While he was there, manager Scooter Braun made him a sign to hold and suggested he should put the photo on his Instagram account. To promote the song, Braun contacted several celebrities who started counting down the days until the release.[2] Several celebrities promoted the song on social networks while counting down the days to the song's release including Fifth Harmony, Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Big Sean, Alanis Morissette, Meghan Trainor, Shaquille O'Neal, James Corden, Martha Stewart, and Britney Spears.[3] Bieber presented the song in early August 2015 to radio professionals at an iHeartMedia event.[4] The song was also peaked at top in iTunes [5] and EarPixels [6].

Composition

The song is written by Bieber, Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd and Mason Levy.[7] "What Do You Mean?" is a pop[8] and EDM[9] song, with tropical house influences.[10] Bieber uses a breathy vocal.[11] The production contains flute instrumentation,[12] piano chords and tropical synths,[11] bass and "slick beats" elements with the sound of a clock ticking.[4] MTV's Gil Kaufman noted the sound was similar to "a slippery flute-like trill over a spare tick-tock island groove and a super chill vibe". He further described it "a kind of sequel" to Skrillex and Diplo's "Where Are U Now", which featured Bieber's vocals.[13] Nick Messitte of Forbes drew comparisons between the song and OMI's "Cheerleader" as they both make use of " the soulful piano in the background, the wash of ride cymbals dropping out here and there, [whereas] synthetic pan flutes replace the trumpet counterpoint of "Cheerleader"."[14] After much speculation and false reporting a rep for Bieber confirmed to Rolling Stone that the track was not produced by Skrillex. Production was handled by Mason (MdL) Levy as well as Bieber. [15]

Critical reception

Szablon:Quote box USA TodaySzablon:'s Carly Mallenbaum, who heard "What Do You Mean?" in early August, described it as a "catchy" song.[4] The Daily Beast agreed, saying: "pretty damn catchy; a slow-burner that, like that collab, swells into a Bieber banger."[16] Gil Kaufman of MTV called it a "banger", explaining "the track is classic JB: seductive, earnest, pleading and just the right amount of sexy."[13] Idolator's Mike Wass named the song Bieber's best work to date, "Vocally, the 21-year-old has never sounded better", adding that the chorus is "instantly memorable".[17] Kewis Corner of Digital Spy's critic deemed Bieber's vocals "smooth and soulful".[7] Writing for Spin, Andrew Unterberger opined the song was "really quite delightful".[10] Sean Fitz-Gerald of Vulture.com was also positive: "The song sounds like what would happen if you took Steve Aoki's alarm clock to a tropical beach resort. (In other words, electro-catchy as hell.)"[18] Giving the song four out of five stars, Billboard reviewer Jason Lipshutz wrote the song "positioned as [Bieber's] huge comeback bid synthesizes the positive components of 'Where Are U Now' and presents something warmer and friendlier, but no less nuanced or impressive."[19]

Music video

A lyric video, directed by Laban, featuring skateboarders Ryan Sheckler and Chelsea Castro was released on August 28, 2015.[13] A music video, directed by Brad Furman and starring John Leguizamo and Xenia Deli, premiered on August 30, 2015 following the MTV Video Music Awards.[20]
