Hrabstwo powstało w 1799 roku[3]. Na jego terenie znajdują się miejscowości: Carthage (siedziba administracyjna), Gordonsville, South Carthage oraz obszary niemunicypalne: Brush Creek, Chestnut Mound, Defeated, Elmwood, Hickman, Lancaster, Mc Clures Bend, McClures Bend, New Middleton, Pleasant Shade, Riddleton[4].
