[edytuj | edytuj kod]Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1831 roku angielski zoolog John Edward Gray w rozdziale dotyczącym nowych gatunków i rodzajów nietoperzy w publikacji swojego autorstwa o tytule The zoological miscellany: to be continued occasionally[1]. Gray wymienił kilka gatunków – Phyllostoma elongatum É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1810, Rhinolophus tridens É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1813, Rhinolophus diadema É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1813, Rhinolophus larvatus Horsfield, 1823, Rhinolophus deformis Horsfield, 1823 (= Rhinolophus larvatus Horsfield, 1823), Rhinolophus vulgaris Horsfield, 1823 i Vespertilio speoris Schneider, 1797 – z których gatunkiem typowym jest Vespertilio speoris Schneider, 1797 (płatkonos dekański).
