Aquila – rodzaj ptaka z rodziny jastrzębiowatych (Accipitridae).
Zasięg występowania
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Eurazji, Ameryce Północnej, Afryce i Australii[9].
Morfologia
Długość ciała 50–104 cm; masa ciała samców 938–4550 g, samic 1153–7200 g; rozpiętość skrzydeł 103–176 cm[10].
Systematyka
Etymologia
- Aquila: łac. aquila – orzeł, być może od aquilus – w ciemnym kolorze; orzeł przedni był emblematem legionów rzymskich, na których sztandarach znajdowała się podobizna orła z podniesionymi skrzydłami[11].
- Aetos: gr. αετος aetos – orzeł[12]. Gatunek typowy: Falco chrysaetos Linnaeus, 1758.
- Chrysaetus: gr. χρυσος khrusos – złoty; αετος aetos – orzeł[13]. Gatunek typowy: Chrysaetus aquilinus R.H. Sweeting, 1837 = Falco chrysaetos Linnaeus, 1758.
- Pteroaetus: gr. πτερον pteron – skrzydło, pióro; αετος aetos – orzeł[14]. Gatunek typowy: Aquila verreauxii Lesson, 1831.
- Uroaetus: gr. ουρα oura – ogon (tj. długoogonowy); αετος aetos – orzeł[15]. Gatunek typowy: Vultur audax Latham, 1801.
- Asturaetos: rodzaj Astur Lacépède, 1799; gr. αετος aetos – orzeł[16]. Gatunek typowy: Aquila wiedii A.L. Brehm, 1855 = Aquila fasciata Vieillot, 1823.

W Bullock Creek w Terytorium Północnym w Australii odkryto pochodzący z miocenu koniec kości barkowej nieopisanego dotąd gatunku Aquila bullockensis[18].
