Według definicji ciała zarządzającego sportami motorowymi na świecie – Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Formuła 1 (w skrócie F1) jest najwyższą klasą wyścigów samochodów jednomiejscowych[1]. Słowo „formuła” w nazwie odnosi się do zbioru zasad, których muszą przestrzegać wszyscy uczestnicy i z którymi muszą być zgodne wszystkie samochody. Sezon mistrzostw świata Formuły 1 składa się z tzw. Grand Prix, które odbywają się na przeznaczonych do tego celu torach wyścigowych, a czasem na zamkniętych ulicach miast. Najbardziej znanym Grand Prix jest Grand Prix Monako, odbywające się w Monte Carlo[2].

Na każde Grand Prix przypadają treningi, kwalifikacje oraz wyścig, na podstawie wyników którego przyznaje się punkty zarówno dla kierowców, jak i konstruktorów; punkty te decydują o tym, któremu kierowcy i konstruktorowi przysługuje mistrzostwo po każdym sezonie. W trakcie kwalifikacji kierowcy walczą o uzyskanie jak najlepszego czasu. Zwycięzca kwalifikacji uzyskuje pole position (w skrócie PP), czyli pierwsze pole startowe do wyścigu. Poniższa lista przedstawia zdobywców pole position wśród kierowców i konstruktorów.

Najwięcej pole position wśród kierowców wywalczył Michael Schumacher – zdobył on 68 pole position. Drugi jest Ayrton Senna (65 pole position), a trzeci Sebastian Vettel (39 pole position). Najmłodszym zdobywcą pole position jest Sebastian Vettel, który wywalczył pole position do Grand Prix Włoch 2008 w wieku 21 lat i 72 dni[3]. Najstarszym zdobywcą pole position jest Giuseppe Farina, jako że zdobył pierwsze miejsce startowe do Grand Prix Argentyny 1954 w wieku 47 lat i 79 dni[4].
